Managing stress in the workplace



What is stress?

“Stress can be defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional, or psychological strain” (Scott, 2020). Stress is a characteristic reaction to a challenge or a danger. Stress happens when an interest surpasses a people adapting capacity and disturbs their mental harmony. Physiologically, stress is a development of chemicals in your body that make strain or pressure. Stress is not generally negative. It might likewise draw out the most incredible in people now and again. It might prompt a person to find imaginative and more brilliant method of getting things done. Also, this positive pressure can result as an inspirational power and give actual strength and transparency of reasoning. However, generally, the term stress has negative consequences.

Stress at work

Employee stress is a developing issue for organizations today. Stress happens in the working environment when an employee sees a circumstance to be too difficult to even consider and in this manner threatening to their prosperity. The primary reasons for pressure happens at work are employee qualities and work conditions. Diverse individual attributes, similar to character and adapting abilities can be vital indicators of whether certain work conditions will create stress. As such, the cause of pressuring for one individual may not be an issue for another person. Stress-related issues incorporate a wide cluster of conditions, such as depression, uneasiness, disappointment, exhaustion, strain and aggressiveness. These signs of stress directly affect the everyday function of the employees at the workplace. As a result, absenteeism, tardiness, leaving early, escaping from responsibilities, more of error work, deterioration in work performance, over reacting, concentration and memory issues and arguing can be seen with in pressured workers.


Causes of work related stress
  • Poor company culture
  • Long hours & excessive workload
  • Poor management, including both under and over-managing
  • Lack of communication
  • Workplace harassment
  • Worrying about job security


Reduce stress at work

Employers must know what are the factors can be stressful at work. Effective communication is one of the best ways to deal with the pressured employees; powerful correspondence can likewise change worker’s opinions. Face to face communication can feel them valued. Make the employees involved in decision making. This will diminish job pressure. It will be more effective if the employees are given flexible working hours and remote work. Ensure the tasks are appropriate for every worker dependent on their capacities; define the responsibilities and targets of each employee and also need to give feedback how well they are going towards these objectives. Appreciation with offering awards and incentives to recognize their performance and improve social cooperation between employees can reduce stress. Encouraging job rotation and job enrichment are important tools to reduce stress as they enjoy moving from their ordinary work to an entirely different job or experience with upgraded tasks with their current job role. Working in a pleasant and comfortable work environment also reduces pressure of employees.

Conclusion

Stress is probably the most concerning issue we need to manage in present day life. It's all over, and many don't understand how much harm every day stress may be doing to them. As stress is a main source to worker’s behavior, it can be taken care of before it gets worst, and turns out to be a lot for a worker to handle by their self.

  11. Stress while working is more customary is modern world. more pragmatic approach is accept the challenges and apply coping strategies meet the challenges. Also it depends on the threshold of individuals, working environment etc. Working stress adversely affect in many ways for both employer and employee if not competent to manage reasonably.

Stress reduction abilities are believed to be one of the biggest contributors to enhanced productivity since employee morale and working connections remain intact.
